RootsMagic 7 with GedGap Tool reviewed – Part 3

from Paul, January 25 2018

Yesterday, we determined that a new source from WebHints provided alternate place name information to be recorded in my tree.

With a paid version of RootsMagic, the WebHints shown yesterday can be used to select and add the Ancestry information into your tree. I prefer to manually add data to be aware of the changes being made.

To update my tree, I highlight the citation footnote and copy these to a tree notes in GedGap as a scratchpad (shown in blue below).

In RootsMagic, I will add the source as an Ancestry Record with the author being Ancestry.com, title being London, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-2003 about Richard Peter Young, publish place being Provo, Utah, USA, publisher being Ancestry.com Operations, Inc. and publish date of 2010 (see image below).

image

In the Master Text tab, I add the reference number (which I copy and pasted from Tree Notes in GedGap) of Reference Number: P70/MRY2/077 (see image below). The original data of London Metropolitan Archives; London, England; Board of Guardian Records, 1834-1906/Church of England Parish Registers, 1813-1906 has been added as source text (not needed, usually reserved for transcripts).

In the repository tab, I select the Ancestry.com repository (see image below).

image

After clicking the OK button, I enter the Master Source title being the same as the title above of London, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-2003 about Richard Peter Young.

image

After saving the source, I changed the place name to Wandsworth, St. Mary, Battersea, England (from my GedGap research notes, see image below),

image

For the Burial event, I cited an existing source by selecting the Master Source name (see image below).

image

I was prompted to add the citation detail (which is the reference number from the Master text tab (see image below).

image

The final result is a source added to the burial event with the citation details of the reference number Reference Number: P70/MRY2/077 (see image below).

To cite London, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-2003 about Richard Peter Young as a general source, from the Edit Person window, click on the Person (as highlighted in the image) and then click the Sources button {for the person sources} (shown in red box, see image below). Repeat the steps for selecting the source from the Master Source List and add the reference number (as per the burial event instructions above).

Tomorrow, I will look at adding the source to my Ancestry tree, checking the differences between the trees and updating GedGap research notes.
