GEDCOM in RootsMagic 7 and Ancestry – Part 3

from Paul, January 18 2018

Yesterday, we covered the GEDCOM formatting required for a citation, and today we look at the source being referenced by yesterday’s citation.

The structure of the GEDCOM follows a similar style, with a _TMPLT tag, followed by a series of FIELD with pairs of NAME and VALUE tags. The major difference is a TID 439 following the initial _TMPLT tag. This refers to a template ID #439 which is the RootsMagic Ancestry source form template.

In addition, an ABBR tag is used to define the master source reference text, i.e. the text to be shown in RootsMagic Master Source list for this source. I have typically replicated the title as the abbreviation.

I will go through each of the template entries, starting with title. The format of this is as follows;

1 TITL title of source
1 _TMPLT
2 TID 439
3 FIELD
3 NAME Title
3 VALUE title of source

This same pattern is repeated for author and publisher;

1 AUTH author of source
1 _TMPLT
2 TID 439
3 FIELD
3 NAME Author
3 VALUE author of source

1 PUBL publisher of source
1 _TMPLT
2 TID 439
3 FIELD
3 NAME Publisher
3 VALUE publisher of source

Lastly, a reference number is defined (in part 1, I mentioned the issue with call numbers so I use reference number tag of REFN instead), followed by a repository (REPO) and notes (NOTE) tag.

In RootsMagic 7, after importing this GEDCOM, this source is recorded as;

And the reference number and notes are recorded in the Master Text;

Tomorrow, I will show the formatting of the repository and how it appears in RootsMagic.

Update (January 18 2018): Adding publish date and place (PubDate and PubPlace tags) in the template is probably beneficial for Ancestry sources, e.g.
1 _TMPLT
2 TID 439
2 FIELD
3 NAME PubDate
3 VALUE 2010
2 FIELD
3 NAME PubPlace
3 VALUE Provo, Utah, USA

The values for publish date and tag can be derived from Ancestry footnotes, e.g. Ancestry.com, London, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-2003 about Richard Young (Provo, Utah, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc., 2010), [Reference Number: P70/MRY2/077]. which is in the format author, title in italics, (Public place: publisher, publish date) and citation detail of Reference Number: P70/MRY2/077 in square brackets.
